Energy Indaba secures
Nanotechnology Public Engagement Media Roundtable Breakfast

Nanotechnology, the science of the very small, could offer another tool in solving the current energy crisis that is cheaper, cleaner and more efficient. Nanotechnology based applications are being developed in energy conservation, production, conversion and storage, and include viable alternatives to fossil-fuels.

Specific technologies being developed include solar photovoltaic cells, hydrogen fuel cell technology, more efficient conventional energy production and energy saving for industry and consumer. Energy is one of six focus areas of the South African National Nanotechnology Strategy, launched by the Department of Science and Technology in 2005.

The two Nanotechnology Innovation Centres established since then are partnering with industry and academia to conduct cutting-edge research to unlock the potential of nanotechnology and to support the training of young non-scientists and technologists.
